Free & Low-Cost Reading Support Tools

Microsoft Immersive Reader
A free tool built into Microsoft Word, OneNote, Outlook, and Teams. It helps improve reading comprehension through features like text read-aloud, focus mode, syllable breakdowns, and picture dictionaries.

Bookshare New Zealand
A free online library for New Zealanders with print disabilities. It offers over one million accessible books, including bestsellers, textbooks, and children’s stories, in formats like audio, braille, and large font.

Learning Ally
A not-for-profit provider of human-narrated audiobooks and support tools specifically for students with dyslexia, visual impairment, and other learning differences.


New Zealand-Based Support & Services

BLENNZ (Blind + Low Vision Education Network NZ)
Provides access to specialised literacy resources for learners who are blind or have low vision, including braille and large print materials.

The Ministry of Education - Assistive Technology
Information about technology and tools funded or supported by the Ministry of Education to help students access the curriculum.
