The Disability Support Services Bill has generated significant concern across New Zealand's disability community. This page provides access to publicly available video submissions so you can hear directly from disabled people, family members, carers, disability organisations and support providers who appeared before the Select Committee.

A Process That Many Considered Unfair

Many organisations and individuals expressed concern about the consultation process used for the Disability Support Services Bill. The period available for preparing written submissions was short, leaving many disability organisations, charities and families with limited time to read the Bill, consult their communities and prepare evidence-based submissions. The parliamentary submission period opened in late May 2026 and closed on 12 June 2026, giving submitters only a short window to respond.

Many organisations also reported receiving very little notice of the time allocated for their oral submissions. In many cases, presenters were given just five minutes to speak on legislation that could have a significant impact on disability support services throughout New Zealand. Several disability organisations publicly questioned whether this process provided sufficient opportunity for disabled people and their representatives to fully explain the practical implications of the proposed legislation.
